Bhojshala Temple (IAST: Bhojaśālā, transl. "Hall of Bhoja") is a temple complex, located in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, India, initially established during the reign of 11th century Paramāra king, Raja Bhoja, as a center of Sanskrit learning. An idol of the deity Ambika (Jain Yakshi) was excavated around the complex in 1875. In 2026, the Madhya Pradesh High Court declared Bhojshala a Hindu temple complex dedicated to the Devi Saraswati (with a claim that Jains and Hindus are single entity), citing historical literature and architectural evidences.
In 2024, a survey conducted by Archaeological Survey of India recovered over a thousand relics, including pillars and sculptures associated with Hindu iconography, indicating a pre-existing temple architecture. The temple deity Vagdevi is also revered by Jains as goddess Ambika, which is commonplace in India, as idols belonging to Jain and Hindu traditions are often found in each other’s temples.
The monument was repaired in the 18th century by Powars of Dhar Maratha State and more extensively by the ASI after 1947. According to some historians, the architectural parts of the building proper are of different periods but mainly date to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the Islamic domed tombs in the wider campus were added between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
Bhojshala is considered an important national monument of India and is open to visitors and tourists. While Jain and Hindu devotees were given only limited access until 2026, they have been allowed to pray regularly since May 15, 2026.
